Dimensions of Releasing Control

Sara Vatore

Sometimes life offers us opportunities to practice what we teach. And sometimes those opportunities come in the form of a three-day workshop filled with logistical chaos, presenting in a hallway, and a child throwing up in the middle of a session. Other times, it's a birthday celebration at an escape room where a simple mistake on my part sends things in an entirely unexpectedly unpleasant direction.

In this episode of Multidimensional Transmissions, I share a few stories from some incredibly full and unpredictable weeks that had me exploring the many dimensions of releasing control.

While there were certainly moments of frustration, disappointment, and discomfort, there was also humor, creativity, flexibility, and an opportunity to recognize just how much my capacity to navigate uncertainty has grown.

These experiences invited me to explore the relationship between control, responsibility, and our capacity to navigate uncertainty. How do we continue showing up with care and intention while allowing life to unfold in ways we never anticipated? How do we recognize what is within our control while finding more ease with all that isn't?

Our desire for control is often deeply connected to our nervous system's need for safety and predictability. When things don't go according to plan, we can find ourselves grasping for certainty, resisting what's happening, or getting caught up in how things should be.

In this episode I discuss what it means to meet life as it unfolds with greater flexibility, curiosity, and compassion (and humor!).

Inside this episode, we explore:

  • The tension between releasing control and remaining responsible for our commitments, choices and actions

  • How our nervous systems seek safety through predictability, planning, and control

  • Navigating unexpected challenges with flexibility, creativity, and humor

  • Why we can feel frustrated or uncomfortable and still show up effectively

  • Taking responsibility for our mistakes without getting stuck in guilt, shame, or self-judgement

  • Expanding our capacity to navigate uncertainty and respond rather than react

  • How expanding our capacity for discomfort and uncertainty creates more room for intentional responses

  • Recognizing what is within our control and learning to loosen our attachment and expectation to outcomes

  • Honoring our needs for rest, nourishment, and recovery,  when navigating demanding seasons of life

As you listen, I invite you to consider where  you might be holding tightly to an outcome, expectation, or version of how things are supposed to look or unfold. What might become possible if you allowed yourself to loosen that grip while continuing to show up with care and intention?

Life is unpredictable, messy, and sometimes downright ridiculous. Perhaps part of our practice is learning to meet all of it with a little more spaciousness, humor, and trust in our capacity to navigate whatever comes next.

If this episode resonates with you, please share it with someone in your world who might need it too. And as always, thank you for listening and being here.
