movement as medicine

Sara Vatore

Movement and dance have been medicine for me and my process since I was very young.

I didn’t recognize this significance growing up until I suddenly stopped dancing when I was in 11th grade after an ankle surgery and lost myself.

I reconnected to dance and the purpose of movement in my life when I discovered Nia in my early 30s.

Moving my body is a way for me to process and integrate anything that is going on in my emotional world.

As someone who holds a lot on a variety of levels and has a history of being confused and not knowing what I feel, dance has always been an alchemizing force in my life to invite in integration and clarity.

A way to access my self and my energy separate from anyone else.

Before the pandemic I had a monthly commitment to myself of attending Journey Dance taught by my dear friend Susan McNamara (https://rememberingwhatmattersmost.com/).

I never missed a class for 3 years straight, until the world shut down in March of 2020.

Over the next couple of years, not having access to this outlet, has been really trying on my system. I have had to get creative about how to bring in and prioritize my intuitive movement personal practice while I have been home.

This past weekend, I had an opportunity to take a Journey Dance class again. This is the third class I have been able to take in the last 2.5 years. It is remarkable how thirsty my system was to move in community in this shared sacred experience.

It is one thing to be moving on my own at home (super important), but I was reminded again Saturday night of the power of coming together to be witnessed in our fullest expression with other bodies.

When I dance I don’t have to show up in any specific defined way.

I get to listen fully to my body and express what is being called to unfold.

I don’t have an agenda and there is no expectation of outcome other than honoring what is true in my system.

I don’t have to know what or why I feel a certain way. I just get to move with the energy that is present.

I am so grateful for this practice and how it soothes and nurtures my unique system.

Movement is essential for our health and our energy integration.

Whether you dance, walk, hike, play a sport, work out, do yoga, roll around on the floor, or something different, allowing your body to have a physical experience daily is an important aspect of thriving.

What are your favorite ways to move your body?

XO Sara
